The Philppines placed 82nd among 157 countries surveyed for the study.  It's a notch higher than China. which ranked 83rd, and a notch lower than Azerbaijan.

The happiness level of about 3000 respondents from each of the countries in the study were evaluated based on six factors , namely: GDP per capita, healthy years of life expectancy, social support (measured by having someone to count on in times of trouble), trust (based on perceived absence of corruption in government and business), perceived freedom in making life decisions, and generosity (based on recent donations).

The small city-state of Singapore ranked as the happiest nation in Asia and is 22nd in the world., beating United Kingdom by a hairline.

Other Asian countries which ranked higher than the Philippines include Thailand (#33), Taiwan (#35), Malaysia (#47), Japan (#53), South Korea (#58), Hong Kong (#75), and Indonesia (#79).

Meanwhile, the five countries that ranked the lowest on the happiness scale are Benin, Afghanistan, Togo, Syria, and Burundi.

The 2016 update is the fourth World Happiness report and was released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Earth Institute at Columbia University.

Be it noted that in Gallup's Positive Experience Index published on March 19 last year, Filipinos ranked 5th among the happiest people in the world. Gallup had an entirely different set of parameters as it conducted face-to-face interviews in 143 countries. The US-based polling specialists asked respondents then if they can recall five positive experiences a day prior to the survey.

Just to remind everyone, The International Day of Happiness or World Happiness Day will be celebrated on March 20. Get ready with your biggest smiles and think happy thoughts!
