Manual on Cyber Safety for Philippine students launched by DepEd

The Department of Education has recently launched the CyberSafe Project Manuals to help protect and warn students from the dangers lurking on the internet. The manuals were developed in partnership with Stairway Foundation and will target Grade 5 students up to junior high school students.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro recognizes the need for protective measures from the impact of technology in the lives of the country's youth. He said that technology should not be avoided just because there are risks involved but parents and educators must be aware and must identify those risks.

Manila Bulletin quoted Luistro as saying, that they must be "two steps ahead of dangers to ensure problems are properly addressed before they arise."

Most students use the internet and are thus exposed to cyberbullying, sexting, and child pornography. Luistro hopes that with the manuals, which contain individual lessons on online safety and protection, the youth will be able to handle or avoid cyber predators.

What's good about the news is that the CyberSafe manuals are available for download from the DepEd website, which is www.deped.gov.ph. The manuals will be cotinuously updated, according to DepEd.

Luistro is encouraging educators and parents to download the manuals, so they can actively participate in guiding and protecting the youth against cyber offenders.
